Áine O'Dwyer – ‘Sun Chord’
The Old Church, N16 9ES , [Venue Details]Áine O'Dwyer - Sun Chord
Sun Chord is a composition for two pipe organs. The piece celebrates the cyclical bridging of old and new time while marking the summer solstice and linking the old St Mary’s church, Elizabethan in origin, with the new church across the street.
The title references the perfect fifth chord, known for its harmonious sun-like qualities, and has been used as a foundational backdrop for sacred chant and the beginnings and endings of early music.
Sun Chord draws an imaginary line or diameter between two sets of pipes and invites you to listen to the chord from a variety of perspectives: from the street outside, close to the pipes inside both buildings, or while you transition slowly from one building to the other, and in your own time.
Áine O’Dwyer is a multi-disciplinary artist, musician, composer, and performer whose work is informed by both the conceptual concerns of sound-art and traditional compositional techniques, embracing the broader aesthetics of sound and its relationship to environment, time, audience & architecture.
She has created performances and recorded works which often allow for both planned and chance events to co-exist in an attempt to bind together both the intrinsic and extraneous in real-time.
We’re thrilled to have been working with Áine to present four events, two of which take place in The Old Church in Stoke Newington, where Áine has been developing pieces especially for this residency.
